12 Couple sleeping positions and their meanings
It’s been so lonely without you here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling…
‘Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you…
Little compares to a night of cosiness, the snuggling warmth of a loving arm. The slightest stroke to your hair or the enveloping hug that fits your body right into theirs. Sinéad O’Connor wasn’t chorusing the lines above for the sake of the song. It was for love. A good night with your significant other is deeply reassuring. So how do you spend the night with them to create flashes in the mind that make you whisper for more?
The sleeping positions of couples show whether they are having a wonderful bedtime conversation, an intimate moment, a misunderstanding or if they just want their space. These sleeping positions include spoon, loose spoon chased down, unwoven braid and starfish. Read on to see the 12 coupling styles and switch as you please
12 Couple sleeping positions and their meaning
- The Spoon Position: This is commonly used by couples. Both couples on their sides, both tucked in, and curving closely together, maintaining skin contact that shows they can’t get enough of each other. It connotes protection. One partner feels protective of the other partner as they use their body to create a safe environment. This position is splendid if you have a snoring partner.
- Loose spoon: This is a loose version of a spoon, similar to a spoon, only that we see couples together at the centre of the bed and may not be touching themselves. It shows a progression in the relationship and allows for some space, making you breathe well and relaxed.
- Chased down: while asleep, you lay with your partner at the centre of the bed. Into the night, with your eyes still heavy with sleep, your turn to cuddle or have a feel of your partner and notice he or she is not close by but is now at the edge of the bed, you move toward your partner to have that magical touch with them. This scenario describes being chased down, just as the name one partner is as chasing the other. The chase down is a sign of mixed emotion that shows a partner either wants their space or seeks attention.
- Intertwining lovers: the couple lie with their heads at the same level, they sleep facing each other in a body and leg locked embrace. This means intense emotional burden, closeness, and happiness. It is advisable not to be in this position for too long to breathe the air your partner releases from their nostril.
- Unwoven braid: In this position, the interwoven lovers unfurl themselves 20-30 mins after sleep set in. This position is perfect for pillow talk and shows a bit of Independence, which keeps things interesting in their relationship. Notwithstanding, this could also mean one or both partners seek attention, but they cannot give it.
- Moon landing: This is a super relaxing sleep positioning for couples, as partners sleep backing each other but touching with their butts or back. The sleep position means to show strength in Independence and that both partners trust themselves to stay together.
- Cliff hanger: shows both couples lying on either side of the bed away from each other, leaving plenty of space in the middle with one foot sticking out at the edge of the bed. This position clearly shows that there is an unresolved issue in the relationship. It is said that the farther apart couples sleep, the worse their relationship is.
- Tether balls: Here, couples sleep in unique positions, but still connect with a touch. A partner curls up like a ball while the other is lying on their back with a hand on the hip of their partner, connecting with a relaxed touch. This means they are both happy in the relationship.
- Tangle: couples use this after an intimate session, though it is commonly used by new couples. They are seen to be in an extremely close hug while lying down. This shows a strong dependency on each other.

10. Starfish: also referred to as the lone beneficial sleeping position because one partner lies on the back, spreading out both hand and legs, leaving the other partner to struggle for space. It connotes selfishness and can worsen snoring if such a partner snores while sleeping.
11. Paper dolls: couples lie on their back next to each other and cradling their partner’s leg or arm. This position ensures intimacy and a chance of decent sleep.
12. Shingle involves both couples laying flat on their back, and either of them places their head on the other partner’s shoulder. It is a symbol of understanding and confidence, with one partner acting as a protector.
