In this edition, we conversed with Maryam Bukar Hassan, also known as Alhanislam. The first UN Global Advocate for Peace and Security. She is a system storyteller who uses culture to influence policy, mobilize young people, and bridge institutions with the communities that they serve. She is a mother, a sister, a daughter, and an author. We discussed the culture of rest in Africa, how rest relates to her recent work, and her Rest to Rise routine.

What’s your opinion about the culture of rest amongst the youth in Africa?

When we talk about the rest culture, amongst African youths, it’s poor. But you can not blame the young people, because everyone is out there hustling.

We have challenges that young people are facing like underemployment and unemployment in the continent. So, of course, a youth is going to be restless. But I say to young people that “Rest As You Go.”

How does Rest relate to your work “A Poet`s Attempts To Freeze Time”?

For me, poetry is something you see everywhere. And rest is a concept in relative. And so for me, pouring out, you know, my feelings and moments that mean so much to me, I find rest in that. My heart and spirit find rest in that.

Even if you are not a writer, poetry in itself can sort of give you a realm for healing, and healing leads to peace. And of course, peace gives you the rest that you need.

How would you describe your rest before and after Fluidé Rest To Rise essentials?

Talking about getting the essentials from Fluidé Homes, what that did for me was to elevate the experience, I love pouring into my space, and when I got the essentials, especially the bed topper.

My goodness! The texture and how it hugs and holds you, because I find it difficult to sleep at night. And then I find it difficult even when I’m asleep, to stay asleep. But then Fluidé Rest To Rise essentials just sort of holds you. And so it just makes life better.
